r/moviecritic – Small Soldiers: a bizarre childhood classic.

This is a movie I loved as a kid (that seems like it should’ve given me nightmares) about super intelligent toy soldiers trying to kill other toys as well as people. It’s a movie with elements of action, adventure and sci fi, with parts that feel more like they were made for kids and others for teenagers, in this case because they were. The tone was changed partway through production in order to please the toy companies that sponsored it, leading to a movie with less explosions. I don’t know how much love this still gets but personally I still think it’s a fun movie and the comedic performances of David Cross, Denis Leary and especially the late great Phil Hartman add a lot to this one. Also re-uniting so much of the cast of The Dirty Dozen is pretty cool.
