The cement bond of UAE

nov-bl-100Set up in 1972, Union Cement Company (UCC) is the first cement producer established in the United Arab Emirates. It is also the biggest cement manufacturer in the UAE. The production commenced with the first line in 1975 under the management of Norcem AS, a member of Heidelberg Cement Group. The second line started in 1977 followed by the third one in 1979.
Ordinary portland cement (OPC) is one of the widely acknowledged products of the company. OPC is a variant of portland cement which is the most common type of cement used in the construction work.union-cement-uae-nov-14
Portland cement is the basic ingredient of concrete, mortar, stucco and grout. Apart from the grey-coloured, commonly administered OPC, portland cement also comes as the white portland cement.
In terms of finished cement, UCC produces about 80 per cent of OPC while other cement types account for 20 per cent of UCC’s total production.
One of the advantages of ordinary portland cement is its low-cost due to the widespread availability of limestone, shales, and other naturally occurring materials used as its constituents. It has been widely used over the last century throughout the world.
Other than OPC, UCC’s portfolio of cement includes oil well cement, high sulphate resisting cement and moderate sulphate resisting cement. The UCC, in collaboration with Norcem AS of Heidelberg Cement Group, is the only oil well cement producer in the United Arab Emirates since 1980. Union Cement Norcem has been catering to the UAE oil industry for the last 28 years with its ‘Norwell’ brand oil well cement.
UCC has continued to develop its production capacity in response to the growing local demand. It developed major line extensions in 1979, 2006 and 2008, taking its production capacity from a modest 250 tonne per day to 4.25 million tonne per annum, the largest capacity of any producer in the UAE. In 1994, UCC obtained ISO 9000 certification and became the first cement manufacturer in the Middle East to have got this certificate. In 1980, UCC acquired API Spec Q1 certification and in 2000, it received ISO 14001 certification for its dedication to the environment.
UCC also owns world’s largest cement kiln which is capable of producing 10,000 tons per day of clinker. UCC’s exports account for a significant proportion of its capacity.
The company’s footprint has grown to include East and West Africa, Brazil, Qatar, Iraq, Yemen and Oman. UCC has many competitive advantages which include first-rate export links to the international market and the production of specialised products like oil well cement.
