Shah Rukh Khan – actor, producer, television personality and an entrepreneur, is not just a favourite of the Indian film audience but his appeal spreads well across different continents. A versatile performer who started his career from the stage before moving on to television and finally to the big screen, Shah Rukh had always wanted to become a famous actor.
Often called ‘King Khan’ or the ‘Baadshah of Bollywood,’ he has acted in over 50 films. He’s greatly known for his hard work and dedication in all his tasks. He is a multifaceted actor who has won accolades for portraying character roles in different genres – romance, comedy as well as action. He got extremely famous for his negative roles in the beginning of his career with movies like Baazigar, Darr and Anjaam. Towards the end of 1998, his candyfloss romance boy avatar was seen in movies like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. The list of his successful movies is long and can be summed up by naming a few blockbusters like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Mohabbatein, Ashokathe great, Main Hoon Na, Devdas , etc.
Shah Rukh holds a graduation degree from Hans Raj College in Delhi University, but was found out of the classes most of the time. He could mostly be seen at the Theatre Action Group (TAG) , where he blossomed under the mentorship of theatre director Barry John. He then did his masters from Jamia Milia Islamia and also joined the National School of Drama. Theatre was a great platform for him to learn the subtle nuances of acting and performing. He started his career from television soaps like Fauji and Dil Dariya and then shifted to Mumbai in 1991. Thus began his great Bollywood journey.
Shah Rukh Khan is the co-chairman of the Motion Picture production company, Red Chillies Entertainment and its subsidiary companies. He has produced about a dozen of films along with his wife Gauri Khan including the top-grossing Chennai Express. He turned a producer in 1999 when he along with actress Juhi Chawla and director Aziz Mirza collaborated to form a production house. But later on, Shah Rukh transformed it into Red Chillies Entertainment.
The awards and accolades have flown in thick and fast. Till date, he has won 14 Filmfare awards and 30 nominations. He was named as the second richest actor of the world in the year 2014 by Forbes with a net worth of over USD 600 million.
Shah Rukh is the co-owner of the two-times Indian Premier League champions, Kolkata Knight Riders, along with actor Juhi Chawla and her businessman husband Jay Mehta. Faced with dismal starts in the first few seasons, the team benefitted from his direct involvement in lifting it out of misery. It has become one of the most valuable sports franchises. Shah Rukh has been involved in various social-awareness programmes through the years like the Pulse Polio and national AIDS Control Organisation campaigns. He is also a member of the board of ‘Make –a–Wish Foundation’ in India.
