Men once ruled the world. But times have changed and Ho Ching is a prime example of the social transformation that has come into the business world. Her persona and fortitude is unyielding. Temasek has grown and transformed under Ho Ching, focussing on the transformation of Asia and Singapore. Its portfolio value has risen from $77 billion to $198 billion over the course of a decade. In 2004, she was appointed as the Executive Director & CEO of the Singapore Investing House where she played a key role in raising the investment fund’s global profile.
Where Temasek’s portfolio has a 72 per cent exposure to Asia and Singapore, their global reach is growing, with non-Asian international investments comprising 28 per cent of their portfolio, as opposed to the 23 per cent in 2011. Before her years at Temasek, Ho Ching was President and CEO of the Singapore Technologies Group, a position she held from 1997 to 2001. It was the product of her vision that today, with large stakes in some of the country’s most powerful corporations, including Singapore Airlines and Southeast Asia’s biggest bank, DBS, Temasek is now looking to increase its holdings outside its parent country. She is married to Lee Hsien Loong, the present Prime Minister of the country and son of Singapore’s founding father Lee Kuan Yew.
She was perhaps the foremost of the women leaders in Singapore who gave people a vision of a new country and shared with them her dream. She gave the world a lot more than just hope or development – she gave them the clout to think past their national boundaries – the faith to believe that change is blind and unbiased. For all that she is made of – honour, pride, valour and sagacity – Asia’s Most Promising acknowledges her as an inspirational and powerful luminary.
