Chairman -Cipla Limited
A passionate Indian with a global vision for affordable healthcare, Dr. Yusuf K Hamied, the Chairman of Cipla, is also Indian pharma’s Renaissance man. During his stint of 53 years at the helm of Cipla, one of India’s oldest pharmaceutical companies, he has created a remarkable legacy which is hard to match. Dr. Hamied is one of the most recognised figures in the Indian Lifesciences space, influencing some widespread policy changes that often shaped public health programs in India. For decades he has been the industry voice for making healthcare affordable to all. Dr. Hamied has received many an accolade for being the pivot of the affordable healthcare revolution through his company that is known for reverse engineering life-saving drugs. Cipla is making healthcare affordable and accessible to the needy in developing nations. The company manufactures approximately 2,000 products in 65 therapy areas with leadership position in respiratory, anti-virals, urology and gynaecology.
Dr. Hamied played an active role in the formation of the Indian Drug Manufacturers Association (IDMA), whose efforts led the Indian Government eventually passing the Indian Patent Act of 1970. This Act helped the Indian drug companies to manufacture and sell the latest medicines at affordable prices. He has always championed that there should be no monopoly in healthcare as only monopoly leads to high prices of drugs.
Dr. Hamied demonstrated to the world that life-saving drugs need not come at a heavy price. In February 2001, Cipla offered a three-drug combination anti-HIV treatment to some African countries and NGO groups like Médecins Sans Frontières for $350 a year per person as against the prevailing price of US$ 12000. This was less than one thirtieth of the market price.
Beyond business, Dr. Hamied is also known for his philanthropy acts and bringing resilience to medicine through Cipla’s charitable trusts which work in the areas of providing financial support, healthcare and education to the disadvantaged masses. Dr. Hamied received the Padma Bhushan in 2005. He is an honorary Fellow of Christ’s College, Cambridge and was recently one of the 25 Awardees of India’s Greatest Global Living Legends.
