Set up in 2008, Calcutta Business School (CBS) is managed by the Shikshayatan Foundation, formerly known as the Marwari Balika Vidyalaya Society. This autonomous institute has its 15-acre campus on the outskirts of Kolkata city in eastern India. It was set up and promoted by reputed industrialists like S.K.Birla and B.M.Khaitan along with others.

It offers an AICTE-approved two years full time post-graduate diploma in management; a certificate in business analytics, a joint programme with SAS Institute, North Carolina; plantation management programme; various open enrolment management development programmes (MDP) and customised training programmes for corporate organisations.

CBS saw an intake of about 60 students in the financial year 2012-13 and a rough participation of about 823 working executives in its management development programmes. The institute has a total of 12 full time faculty members, giving it a student-teacher ratio of roughly 8:1, out of which about eight are PhD degree holders. “CBS has tied up with Eastern Michigan University, USA for faculty exchange, curriculum development, student exchange, joint research projects and other academic activities,” Goutam Sengupta, director of the institute, says. In 2014-15, CBS is looking forward to scaling up its infrastructure to accommodate around 240 post-graduate students in its student’s hostel. Plans are afoot to launch a three-year part time post-graduate diploma in management for working executives, some short certificate courses like quality management programme in collaboration with Quality Circle Forum of India (QCFI) and SAP, some MDPs like certificate in general management and some other organisational development courses like worker’s behaviour enhancement programmes.

The enrolment process pays equal heed to the curricular and extra-curricular achievements of the candidates as it does to their career objectives. Hence they are expected to write a short essay on their career objectives. Judging parameters are clarity, maturity and the feasibility of the career objectives written. A bare minimum 50 per cent score is required in graduation along with favourable CAT and MAT scores.

There are a two primary clubs at the campus – mpower (marketing club) and dolphin (finance club). In addition to these, students also participate in various other activity centres like sports cell, placement cell, cultural cell, food and beverage committee, system cell and corporate relations cell.

The institute has various partnerships and tie-ups which help in producing better quality executives. Its partnership with SAS Institute allows the students, enrolled in the business analytics programme, to gain access to SAS software for training purpose.

They get certificates from SAS for training on the software. CBS has signed a MOU with Videocon Group to jointly develop and deliver various industrial skill-training programmes to under-graduate and graduate students in eastern India. It has partnered with Institution of Valuers for conducting MDPs, seminars and workshops to benefit valuation professionals.
