The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) was founded in 1959 in Khlong Luang in Thailand. It is an international institute of higher education which specialises in courses on engineering, advanced technologies, and management and planning. The course is modelled in a manner so as to ensure that the students are in touch with day-to-day technological changes. The institute is a member of the Greater Mekong Sub-region Academic and Research Network (GMSARN) and LAOTSE, an international network of leading universities in Europe and Asia. AIT, which was founded as a SEATO graduate school of Engineering, used to initially receive funds from SEATO members.
AIT has time and again proved its commitment to provide education that reflects the changing times. These efforts were duly recognised in 1989 when it received the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Peace and International Understanding for shaping a new generation of engineers and managers committed to development of Asia and for sustaining an atmosphere of academic excellence and regional camaraderie.
The vision of the institute is to strive to become a leading and unique multicultural institution of higher learning in the region, offering state of the art education, research and training in technology, management and societal development.
The institute has 2,300 students from more than 50 countries, 18,000 alumni from 85 countries, more than 28,000 short-term trainees from 70 plus countries, 120 world-class faculty members from more than 20 countries, more than a hundred research staff, all supported by more than 500 support staff from about 30 countries.
It has about 400 sponsored research projects and 330 partners. Its three schools and 15 research and outreach centres offer more than 1,000 courses in 32 fields of studies.
The mission of AIT is “to develop highly qualified and committed professionals who will play a leading role in sustainable development of the region and its integration into the global economy.”
The institute keenly believes in promoting extra-curricular activities. It conducts a cricket tournament every year which is popularly labelled as Thailand’s Premier League. It conducts golf and swimming tournaments.
It has all the advanced facilities that can be found in any reputed institution worldwide. It is equipped with a nine-hole golf course and a swimming pool. Facilities to play other sports include badminton, takraw, table tennis, tennis, basketball and volleyball along with many others.
The faculty at AIT is well respected and it has over 100 nationally and internationally acclaimed scholars. AIT ensures that the best of skilled manpower is available at their disposal. AIT was awarded the 2006 Friendship Order in the area of international relations for its contribution towards human resource training in Vietnam. The success of AIT over the years has made it a force to reckon with in the field of education.
